Malibu Dealers Make Boating Industry's Top 100

Each year, the staff of Boating Industry magazine sends Top 100 applications to more than 3,000 boat dealers asking a series of quantitative and qualitative questions. This year, the application consisted of 75 questions divided into 5 sections, each focused on a different aspect of a dealer’s business.
After months of evaluations, including a week-long retreat dedicated to the ranking process, the editors of the magazine revealed their final selections at a black tie gala in Orlando, Fla. Here is a list of Malibu dealers who made the cut.

10. Singleton Marine Group, Dadeville, Ala.
13. Seattle Boat Co., Seattle, Wash.
48. Town & Country Marine, Lakefield , Ont., Canada
49. The Boat Shop, Tafton, Pa.
60. Liquid Sports Marine, Orlando, Fla.
61. Candlewood East Marina, Brookfield, Conn.
70. Deep Creek Marina, McHenry, Md.
75. Hurst Marina Ltd., Manotick, Ont., Canada
80. Shipyard Marine, Suamico, Wis.

Mark Watts of Liquid Sports in Orlando, Florida (liquidsportsmarine.com) was very appreciative to make the list for the seventh year in a row. Very few dealers have accomplished this. "We approach every year -- and every customer -- with the same passion and enthusiasm we had when we started this business 15 years ago," Watts said. "It's that philosophy that has kept in business for so long -- and on 'the list' for seven years in a row."

Dallas Friday Update

Story & Photos By Kevco

The most winningest female wakeboarder of all-time invited us over for a ride today. Dallas Friday has been on the water daily behind her pink-toned/silver flake Wakesetter VLX, after overcoming what some thought could be career-ending injuries to her legs.

Besides some visible scars left from surgery around her knees, you wouldn't think anything was wrong by the way Dallas rode her wakeboard and wakesurfer. However, her trainers at Sports Specific Rehab and coach Mike Ferraro suggested she rides mellow through the winter and saves up for the spring, when the 2012 Queen Of Wake Tour get closer. "I know I can get all my tricks back," Friday said with confidence. "I'm just so happy to be back on the water everyday and I feel great."

Thomas Degasperi Factory Visit

Malibu skier Thomas Degasperi, who is currently #2 on the Elite Slalom Rankings, came by the factory in Loudon, Tennessee to check out his new Response TXi.

He also had a chance to check out the boat building process, where he showed a genuine interest. Degasperi also got to hang with CEO Jack Springer, Lani Farmer and Ritchie Anderson. Later that evening, Drew Halford (Director of International Sales) took him out on the town. "We had a great time and left a trail of broken hearts in our wake," Halford said. "I think Thomas is still receiving texts from a few local women who want to be the next Mrs. T-Gas."

Here is a recent excerpt from WATERSKI Magazine's Leading Edge about Degasperi:
There are few skiers on the planet who have the confidence to perform their best when it really matters. Thomas Degasperi is one of those skiers. This season, he took first place in slalom at Global Championships and Worlds, not to mention third at Moomba, fourth at Masters and fourth at the Malibu Open. It takes a clear mind to consistently ski well, he says. “If I start to look at the people on the banks, if I listen to music or the announcers, if I look at other skiers to see what they’re doing, then my concentration level decreases.”
So how does the two-time world slalom champion stay on his game? His aunt Mariella, a therapist who studied sports psychology, talked through several relaxation techniques, which she recorded for him to use before he competes at tournaments. “Her techniques help me relax both my mind and my body, so that I’m ready to compete when the time comes,” he explains.

Will Asher Named Slalom Skier Of The Year

From WATERSKI Magazine (waterskimag.com): "There was no award that caused more heated debate among our colleagues than male slalom skier of the year. With Thomas Degasperi banking wins this season and Nate Smith running 41 off in pro events, the choice is difficult. However, WILL ASHER’s competitive stats and electrifying skiing speaks for itself, and he continues to lead in an era where the talent pool is extremely deep. Just when it begins to seem as though any skier could win on any weekend, Asher continues to gather the majority of the titles. With four major wins in the second half of 2010 and a big victory at this year’s Malibu Open, his no-nonsense mental toughness continually takes him to the top step of the podium. With his dogged determination and unmatched work ethic, Will Asher is the guy to beat at any event he enters."

EXCLUSIVE: Regina Jaquess Speaks On New World Record

Slalom Champ Raises The Bar to 2 Buoys @ 41' Off

It was like déjà vu. Regina Jaquess walked into the Eddie Green Budweiser Octoberfest with fond memories. Exactly one year ago, she signed with Malibu Boats and set a world record at the same site, getting through 1 & 1/2 buoys at 41' off behind the Response LXi. This year, on the first day of October, this 27-year-old competitor would have an opportunity to top her own record and she was psyched to give it a crack behind the all-new Response TXi.

The event took place on Lake Louie, where Regina resides in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. It's also the site where the legendary Cory Pickos runs the Pickos World Ski Center. After sailing through the full course at 39' off (something only five women have ever accomplished), Regina set her sights on 41' off. This is a totally different ballgame, because when the 34-foot rope is outstretched alongside the boat traveling 34 m.p.h., the handle is still 3.5 feet away from the skier's buoy. That's where Regina is at a slight disadvantage at 5'4" tall, compared to her other competitors with a longer reach. But she was able to combine her skill, focus and intense training to make history as she carved around both the one and two-ball, entering into a territory no other woman has ever been.

"That was a great feeling," Regina said as she climbed onboard the TXi, which has been getting rave reviews. "This boat is driving way better than any boat out there. It's not pushing as much water and the wakes are smaller and softer." She's also noticing something that every slalom skier wants more of, "When you make your edge change, you gain so much free time. It helps you swing and really maximize every inch of the course. You are always connected with this boat."

Driver Chad Scott has now towed the current world record for both men and women and knows exactly what he wants out of a towboat for peak slalom performance. "This boat drives down the course on a rail. It's glued to the water, but you still have the ability to react if you need to. There's less counter-steering involved compared to other boats because the TXi has no slide, no floating feeling. But it's still maneuverable and easy to drive. There were some really good scores behind it all weekend in every division. The TXi is the best boat I've ever driven."

On Monday morning after the event, Regina shifted gears to another focus of hers, where she is part-owner at a local pharmacy. Regardless of the inherent, lack of adrenaline around the office, she was still buzzing from her killer performance. Regina took time to reflect on the past year and values her role on Team Malibu tremendously. "Between Will Asher, Thomas Degasperi and myself, we really feel like a special crew. Malibu's staff takes time to make sure we are taken care of and you don't always see that out of a boat company. When you know they are there to back you up, you can't ask for anything more as an athlete. In the end, they are just pushing themselves to be the best boat out there. I've driven every boat on the market today and the TXi is the best… hands down."

A day with Jake Owen

Not even a busy country-wide tour with Keith Urban could stop country music recording artist Jake Owen (@jakeowen) from riding behind the new Malibu (@malibuboats) Wakesetter 22 MXZ.

We were fortunate enough to hang out with Jake, and spend the day riding, eating, and just getting to know Jake more! There wasn't much time for talking though, as Jake was on the water, and enjoying his quick time off from the tour. He was stoked on the Wakesetter 22 MXZ and had great things to say about it! Jake loved the rampy wakes for wakeboarding and the big and tall wave he surfed behind!

Jake got the opportunity to hit his first rail and nailed it (Which is a good thing, no one would want to see him in concert with a cast on)

He claimed to have gone so big behind the 22 MXZ that we could not keep him in the camera's frame! Always fun and a pleasure to hang out with Jake and his crew!

Malibu and Axis Make Big Impact At Surf Expo

(photo: BillDoster.com)

Surf Expo is undoubtedly the industry's biggest weekend of the year. In 2011, Malibu Boats dug deep with intentions to make a big impact. With the launch of two new models, the Wakesetter 22 MXZ and Response TXi, all eyes were on the boats and the team was psyched to show them off.

The trade show kicked off with a bang on Thursday morning, with our booth featuring a sparkling metallic, dark blue/white MXZ and a metallic Charcoal/Reuben Axis A22. Besides talk of the perfect wakes, plush amenities and the spacious bow on the MXZ, anticipation was creeping for the 8th Annual Wake Awards that evening. Malibu went big, securing an 80-person VIP list and coming on board as a title sponsor.

Excitement set in early, during the WSIA Industry awards, where Malibu won "Best Ad Campaign." Ad creative and photography was a big focus this year, and it was an honor to take home this coveted award. Special thanks to Larry Meddock of the WSIA and our incredible photographer, Tom King. Also, congrats to Chessie Marine for their hard work resulting in the "Break Out Dealer Of The Year" award as well as Tommy's Slalom shop for winning top honors as "Retailer Of The Year." "Best Promotion" went to Active Watersports, which made a clean sweep for all three retailer awards going to Malibu dealers!

Friday's action was shared between the trade show and Malibu's on-water demo day in Windermere, just minutes from Surf Expo. Team rider Brian Grubb brought his all-black 23 LSV, which is still one of the most appealing boats on the water today. Over 20 dealers showed up from places all over the world like Argentina and Poland to get a first glimpse of the new MXZ and TXi. Eddie Trogdon, an active INT League member was on hand and we also saw appearances from owners like David Henderson and his son Hunter, (8), who just took first place in the Junior Boys division at the WWA World Championships.

The Response TXi already made its mark at the Malibu Open in August, but here, the dealers got a chance to take it for a spin, including Mark Watts from Liquid Sports in Orlando as well as Tommy Phillips from Tommy's Slalom Shop in Denver, Colorado. Tommy was impressed with his continuing tests of the Response TXi. "The TXi handles like a dream, has no wake at 15 and 22 off and very little fluff," Tommy said. "All the skiers at our ski school think it's their favorite boat of all time and I would agree. The drivers seat feels secure and you have command of the boat. There is no glare off the dash like other boats and the simplicity of the operating system is a big plus."

With deep roots in wakeboarding, going back to literally day one, Tommy knows what his customers are looking for in boat design and he likes how the MXZ accommodates everyone. "The MXZ has great wakes for all levels," Tommy said. "Very rampy, clean and smooth! The bow space is maximized and we had four people comfortable up front and they could see all the action as Chad Sharpe put on a show. Deep storage allowed us to have ten people comfortably on board with lots of gear stowed. The auto pull up feature will turn new boat owners into pros at driving their family and friends."

The Auto Pull-Up feature Tommy speaks of is another unprecedented innovation from Malibu and Indmar, and implemented into the line by Danny Gasper, Malibu's Director of Product Design. It allows a rider or skier to record the rate of acceleration they prefer, and the driver just punches the throttle and you will get the same start every time.

The MXZ's Hi-Flow ballast pumps were also a hit. The hoses were enlarged to 1-1/8" with an 1100 GPH pump, which allows an increase in filling speed from 40-50 percent. The riders on hand were impressed with the wake without having to add any additional ballast. Phillip Soven actually got to take this gem home with him.

Dealers came into Saturday's trade show amping on the new boats, and it was a great plus to be able to have them share the on-water experience with others. Lani Farmer also attended the WSIA meeting on Sunday morning, where the board of directors discussed and voted on multiple issues affecting our waterways and industry.

Overall, the Malibu staff and dealers considered Surf Expo weekend a home run. The factory is busy churning out new orders and the sales team are getting geared up for boat show season. Look for new videos from demo day in a matter of days! For any questions, please email Kevin Michael at kevinmichael@maibuboats.com

Malibu Rider Wins Brazil & S. American Championships

Congratulations to Malibu's Marcos "Paçoca" Amato who took first place at the Brazil and South American Championships on September 17-18 at NASA Park in Campo Grande, Brazil. With over 40 riders participating, Marcos put in a lot of preparation behind his 2011 Malibu VLX.

"This contest was sick!" Marcos said. "I was the first in the final heat and I did a very consistent run, putting a lot of pressure on the others riders. I'm very happy because I did almost all my difficult tricks in my run, and landed them very smoothly. It was so great to see everybody excited. I improved a lot since I began to practice behind my VLX. I learned a lot of new tricks and I have no doubt that this great boat helped me to get better. Thanks to everyone who cheered for me and for my victory. It was really awesome to win this championship.

WOMAN ATTEMPTS 30-MILES AROUND MANHATTAN ON WATER SKIS!

Having a Similar Name to a Unique Rehab Center Lead One NYC Resident to Attempt a World-Record for Veterans, Brain Injury Research

Over the years Mary Kocy has had to say, "Sorry, wrong number," to callers seeking the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitative Medicine rather than her similar- sounding construction company, Rusk Renovations. Eventually she investigated “the other Rusk” and uncovered a groundbreaking research laboratory that specializes in traumatic brain injury (TBI). But it wasn’t until Kocy spoke with the Institute and learned about its mission to raise awareness for the dangers of undiagnosed TBI injuries, especially among U.S. soldiers where statistics are alarmingly high, that her involvement deepened.
“I went from ‘so, what are you guys all about,’ to ‘how can I help,’” said Mary Kocy, CEO and Partner of Rusk Renovations. “After learning how much awareness and donations they needed, I got the idea to attempt a water ski stunt for charity.”
Kocy, 55 only began waterskiing last summer but fell in love with the sport from day one. Now, and with the support of friends and business colleagues, she will attempt what she is calling One Good Turn Around Manhattan as a way to raise awareness and funding for soldiers suffering from TBI. The never-been-done-before stunt will involves circling approximately 30-miles of Manhattan’s waters on water skis.
"We’re thrilled to have Mary’s support,” said Steven Flanagan, professor and chair of rehabilitation medicine at Rusk. “Today's battlefields are sending our military personnel home with significant head and upper extremity injuries--often resulting in cognitive impairment due to undiagnosed brain injury. These unseen injuries can be a significant barrier to a person's ability to successfully reintegrate into their community. Getting the word out about TBI is imperative, so we support anything that helps us do that…even if it involves water skis and world records.”
Kocy and team (friends and colleagues) hope One Good Turn Around Manhattan raises significant awareness and donations for today’s veterans suffering from TBI and helps them return to a productive civilian life.
Kocy set the date for her attempt for Sunday, September 18, after gaining clearance from the US Coast Guard. She then worked with NYU Medical to establish an easy way for people to donate. All donations through NYU Medical, via Kocy's donor webpage, will be applied directly to the program and will immediately help veterans in need. All donations are fully tax deductible and secure.
Others who have signed on to support One Good Turn Around Manhattan include: HR/NY, the NYC local chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM); Kinloch Consulting; Island Water Sports in Port Jefferson Long Island, who is lending the boat and driver for the event. Others include Pamala Skillings of Skillfully Done, Jan Arrigo Fine Art Photgraphy; Louise Fili, Ltd., PitchPoint Public Relations and Rusk Renovations, Inc.
Kocy's spouse and business partner, John Rusk, pilots the 1956 vintage training vessel that will be pulling her through history.
Kocy's unique event will not only help raise awareness of TBI but also help fund two pilot projects that will drive initial research to differentiate TBI from post-traumatic stress disorder and then create a vocational support program for veterans participating in the project.

WATERSKI Mag Editor Praises All-New TXi

Making its debut at the Malibu Open in early August, the all-new Response TXi made an immediate impact, pulling slalom champion Will Asher into 41 off. Besides the TXi's proven high-end performance, the new T Cut Diamond Hull will accommodate different levels of skiers as well, by taming the flow of water to allow smoother wakes at slower speeds and longer line lengths. And customers can also expect the finest styling and plush amenities Malibu is known for. In essence, every skier will feel connected to more than just the rope.

Todd Ristorcelli, Editor of WATERSKI Magazine has skied behind every new ski boat in the last 15 years and was very impressed with the 2012 TXi. "Malibu must have had big-time confidence in their new Response TXi, by immediately launching it to the competitive scrutiny of the Malibu Open," Ristorcelli said. "The result: flawless performance. The boat's innovative running surface produces pillow-soft wakes for skiing's elite as well as for advancing longline skiers looking for every competitive edge they can get." Look for the TXi to be featured in a three-page gatefold advertisement in WATERSKI's Winter, 2011 issue, which will arrive in time for Orlando's SURF EXPO in early September.

All-New 2012 Wakesetter MXZ

Malibu Boats Unveils Wakesetter 22 MXZ

Newest addition to Wakesetter series maximizes space, style and performance

Merced, Calif. — Malibu Boats is proud to announce the newest addition to its Wakesetter series — the 2012 Malibu Wakesetter 22 MXZ. With its super-wide, extra-deep bow, bold new take on classic Malibu style, and signature performance, comfort and quality, the all-new Wakesetter 22 MXZ is designed to maximize your time on the water.

Designed entirely in a digital environment, the Wakesetter 22 MXZ features millimeter-perfect construction and a sleek new style that commands attention on the water. The wide-open bow helps create acres of seating and storage, while the extra-deep design provides a safe and snug social space. All that room screams Malibu luxury, thanks to supple vinyl and a legion of stainless-steel grab handles and cup holders.

The 22 MXZ’s all-new hull delivers Malibu’s signature standout performance. Up front, it’s super-sharp entry into the water yields a smooth, dry ride in even the roughest water, and the big, clean wake boasts long transitions designed to take your riding to the next level.

“The wake definitely has that classic Wakesetter shape with long transitions to take off and land on and it’s nice and big without adding a ton of weight,” says Malibu Boats team rider Brian Grubb. “It also looks amazing — both when you see that bow coming at you and the rounded corners in the rear.”

It’s all topped off by a host of Malibu’s best-in-class features, from the exclusive Illusion G3 tower with swivel board racks and the touch-screen performance of Malibu Touch Command to the rear-facing transom seating, which features a stereo remote, stainless-steel cup holders and swim step-accessible wet storage.

Malibu Owners Shine At Worlds

A big congrats goes out to all our dedicated Malibu owners, whose hard work paid off at the 2011 WWA Worlds! All of these riders have been working hard all summer and share the same common bond of our Malibu lifestyle. Read below for your chance to be recognized in the Malibu family!

Cory Teunissen -- 1st Place -- Boys Division (10-13)

What a year for Australia's Cory Teunissen, who not only won the Boys Division at Worlds, but also took home 1st at Australia's Queensland State Championships as well as 1st at the Australian Nationals. He also came in 2nd at the International Wakeboard Association Championships in Milan, Italy. Cory rides at home with his father Jeff, who owns a pair of Wakesetters in Australia. Congrats!

Shelby King -- 3rd Place -- Girls Division

With help from her father, Shawn King (also a Malibu owner), Shelby had a clean run, landing in 3rd place in the Girls Division. Watch her ride online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eZNsiwrSu4

Mitch Kappler -- 3rd Place -- Boys Division (10-13)

Kappler, the only 10-year-old in the division rallied up to third place. His riding back home definitely paid off, supported by his father Brent, mother Renee and older brother Jake.

Hunter Henderson -- 1st Place -- Jr. Boys Division

9-year-old Hunter Henderson, fresh off his Wake Games victory in May, took first in Jr. Boys at Worlds. His home riding on Lake Wylie in the Carolina's definitely paid off behind his Wakesetter 24/7. He also has been riding with Cobe and Tarah Mikacich behind their V-Ride while in Orlando. Keep it rolling, Hunter!

If you are a Malibu owner who is proud of your accomplishments, please e-mail kevco@kevcomedia.com. Whether you performed well at a contest, filmed a new trick or just want to submit cool photos from your day on the lake, this is your chance!
